TRANSCRIPTION: The main object of the spring round-up is to get the calves all properly marked with brands of their owners. Every ranchman has a brand of his own, such as the “Circle Cross” the “Lazy L.” etc. These are all registered in the books of the different cattle associations. At the round-up the ownership of the calves is determined by the brand of the mother cows. Among thousands of cattle a cow and her calf will stick together. Having cut out a pair of them from the herd, one of the boys, mounted his pony, throws his rope around the hind feet of the calf, and drags him up to the fire. Here two men seize the little fellow and hold him while another puts the hot iron on his tender flesh. Released, he goes bawling to his mother, his owner’s brand now on him for life. Even if he wanders hundreds of miles from the home range the title will hold good and be acknowledged.
